Amangiri, Later in the Year
Why late autumn is the finest season in the canyon country of southern Utah.
Most visitors arrive at Amangiri in the height of summer. The canyon country is at its finest a few months later, when the heat has passed, the crowds have thinned and the evenings are cool enough for a fire.
The light changes with the season. With the sun lower in the sky, the mesas hold their colour well into the afternoon, and the mornings are clear and still. It is the time of year for a sunrise walk on the Hoodoo Trail with a private guide, and for the slot canyons without other visitors.
We generally recommend five nights. Clients fly privately into Page, twenty-five minutes from the resort, so the journey from home takes an afternoon. We request desert-facing suites, arrange guides in advance and keep the days lightly planned.
The cooler weather also suits families. Children can walk comfortably in the middle of the day, the via ferrata on Cave Peak becomes far more pleasant, and an evening of stargazing on the terrace is often the highlight of the stay.
For Thanksgiving, we suggest beginning plans early. The tented pavilions at Camp Sarika are few in number and are reserved well in advance.
